International Arbitration and International Law

Martim Della Valle has extensive knowledge in the domain of international arbitration. He holds a PhD degree in international law with a thesis on arbitration, approved with the highest honors. He published two books on international arbitration: International Arbitration Ex Aequo et Bono (New York, Juris, 2016) and Arbitragem e Equidade (São Paulo, Atlas, 2012). Martim also wrote a number of articles and case notes in well-respected publications. His works have been cited in leading cases and he has extensively advised on multiple topics of international law.

Commercial, Corporate, M&A

Martim has worked extensively with complex commercial matters, ranging from international distribution to mergers and acquisitions and software license agreements. In many cases, Martim has acted as main negotiator for a wide range of agreements. He also worked on a number of M&A-related arbitration cases, including many price adjustment disputes. He has experience in a wide range of industries, from automotive to civil construction, software and consumer goods.


Martim has been involved in hundreds of disputes concerning distribution agreements. As in-house counsel, he was responsible for all legal aspects of a huge multinational distribution network. It included the negotiation, drafting and review of all legal instruments related to distributors and the direct supervision of more than 600 disputes relating to severance payments and general distribution issues. While working in law firms, he was often instructed to act for the automotive industry.

Competition and Antitrust

Martim has been for many years the global head of competition and antitrust for AB-InBev. As such, he has supervised a number of very high-profile cases in all continents, ranging from complex global mergers to unilateral conduct investigations. Martim has also worked substantially on antitrust-related litigation. Previously, Martim has been the head of antitrust for AmBev, with extensive practice in Latin American countries. Martim acted as a Non-Government Advisor (NGA) for the ICN – International Competition Network and is a frequent speaker in antitrust topics.

Compliance and Anti-Corruption

As the Chief Compliance Officer of AB-InBev, Martim designed and implemented a global compliance program that became a case study at the Harvard Business School (available on demand). The program also received a number of awards such as the Financial Times Most Innovative Lawyers and the Corporate Counsel Compliance team of the year. While at AB-InBev, Martim supervised all aspects of its compliance program, including investigations. Martim has also led AB-InBev’s defense in an investigation brought by the US SEC and the DOJ (settled in 2016).

Martim is a visiting lecturer at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) in Vienna and at the Catholic University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium). Martim is a frequent speaker on compliance and corruption. He is a board member of Transparency International Belgium and has served as a board member of the European Chief Compliance and Integrity Officers Forum (2017-2018).


Martim is a founder of Law Tech company Zenith Source. In this condition, he has dealt with many aspects of law and technology and has been involved in large, complex disputes and commercial negotiations relating to software licensing.
