Martim Della Valle is an independent arbitrator based in Brussels, Lisbon and São Paulo, specializing in commercial disputes.
As a seasoned practitioner who has been involved in hundreds of disputes in all continents and in different capacities, Martim has represented parties as external counsel, has supervised in-house and external teams and has acted as arbitrator in complex, high-profile and high-value disputes.
Until August 2018, Martim was Global Vice-President for Compliance, Antitrust and Litigation at AB-InBev, the world’s largest brewer. As such, he was the chief counsel for litigation, supervising a wide range of disputes globally. He has also been the global head of antitrust and the group Chief Compliance Officer. During 2015-2016, he also acted as Head of Legal for Africa during the acquisition of SABMiller by AB-InBev, the World’s third largest M&A at the time.
Previously, Martim was a Legal Director for AmBev, a subsidiary of AB-InBev in Latin America. At this position, he acted as the chief counsel for litigation, antitrust, criminal and administrative law. He has also been the general counsel for AmBev’s HILA Business Unity (Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guatemala and Dominican Republic).
Before his in-house career, Martim practiced law in major, top-ranked law firms. He has worked in São Paulo (Brazil), Paris (France) and Cologne (Germany).
Martim’s scholarly engagement in the field of international arbitration comes with the publication of several articles and two books: International Arbitration Ex Aequo et Bono (New York, Juris, 2016) and Arbitragem e Equidade (São Paulo, Atlas, 2012).
Likewise, Martim is a member of the European Advisory Board of CPR – International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution and has been a member of the Brazilian advisory board of the ICDR/AAA. He is a lecturer at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) in Vienna and is a board member of Transparency International Belgium. He is also a frequent speaker on topics related to arbitration, antitrust and compliance.
Martim has always been very involved in case management and efficiency in legal operations, including in arbitration proceedings. He is deeply interested in the use of technology in law: he is the founder of a Legal Tech company called Zenith Source, dedicated to software for the compliance function.
